Ry's First at Brushing Teeth

Yeh! Finally, Ry has enough teeth for brushing. Now, he has 4 upper and 4 lower front teeth and 2 upper and 2 lower molars. I have no idea why he skipped his incisors as he got his molars first. Haven't checked whether this is the correct sequence of teeth budding!

Here's a shot of Ry brushing his teeth on Friday night after we got him a toothbrush during our post Christmas shopping! I've already delegated this "body maintenance" job to daddy as I'm in charge of other jobs like clipping his nails.

For all of you friends who have following my blog, one thing that is always associated with Ry is "slow". He's slow in getting his first tooth (only at 13 mths for first one and subsequently one tooth per month), slightly slower in learning to walk (started walking at 14.5 mths) and he's slow in learning to speak (can only say "ball", "papa", "mama" and "bo" for car horns up till now at 21 mths). Sigh .......!

As mentioned in my earlier blogs, the only thing he's better at is dancing and balancing. But recently, he has learned to sing. Not really real singing lah, but more like humming to my lullaby at night. So he will go "er........." to my tune. It is funny that he's embarrassed of humming in front of K so K has to secretly listen to his humming outside our room. Seems like Ry is more musical than his mommy and daddy :)

I'm definitely not complaining here or worried about his supposedly "slower" development measured by the common yardstick! In fact, both K and I are pretty glad that he remains more like a baby and often makes us laugh with some of his babyish ways. We are also thankful of the possible slower onset of the terrible 2 toddler phase. So friends, don't worry about us!

First Snow Storm 2008

Just about 2 weeks away to a new year 2009, Boston welcomes its first storm of the winter. It had been snowing since Friday afternoon and hasn't stopped since. When I woke up on Friday morning, the first thing I asked K was whether the snow had started as I hate to miss Ry's gym lesson later in the morning. Fortunately, the sky looked bright enough and upon watching the weather news, it was forecasted that the storm will only start around noon. So, I decided to leave the house early to pick up some groceries before I bring Ry to his lesson. And I quickly rushed home after his lesson at 1130 am so that I can beat the snow storm.

The roads were pretty clear and there were many parking spots along the street just outside my apt. I was glad and later then I learned from K that most schools and offices declared half day so that people can stay at home during the snow and avoid travelling, which explained the smooth traffic for me to make it home within 15 minutes instead of the half an hour drive.

As expected, flurries started falling from the sky at 1.30 p.m. and then turned to a heavy blanket of snow by 4 p.m. together with strong winds. By Saturday morning, the storm abated slightly but there's still flurries. K went to shovel snow off the car around lunch time and it took him a whole 40 minutes or so to finish his job. By then, he was drenching in sweat. We still went ahead with our plan to join a group of Singaporeans for a holiday potluck at a friend's place in the evening despite the warning that the storm will pick up again at night.

I was extremely terrified of driving in the snow and had a hard time getting out of the parking lot through the huge piles of snow on the ground. I drove extremely slowly. A 10 minutes drive became a 25 minutes route to LC's house. Fortunately, K was beside me all the time so that boosted my confidence. I wondered how I'm going to drive alone and especially parallel park in the coming days without him giving me directions. At least, we had a nice evening together and had a great dinner with out SG friends. The kids were also having a great time playing with each other too.

The second part of the storm continues today, and now the courtyard of my apt is blanketed with a fresh layer of snow. One of my neighbours actually went out to build a snowman wearing Celtics jersey in the courtyard. Really adorable!

I also went out to snap a few pictures of my snow covered car to remind myself in future while Ry is napping in our warm king sized bed.

Lessons at My Gym

Since Thanksgiving, the Music Together lesson that Ryan used to attend every week has ended. So to keep him occupied at least one day in the week, I had been researching on activities and indoor playspaces that he can go to. Finally, I decided to enrol him for My Gym. The gymnasium is located in Allston next to the Shaws which I usually go for marketing every week, especially if I need to pick up Chinese veg from the Chinese Supermarket nearby.

The price is around the same as what I paid for Music Together, which averages out to about $23 per lesson. However, My Gym allows the kids to make use of their gymnasium once a week during the Open Gym slots, meaning that it opens up their playspace free for kids who are enrolled in their program. So I have been bringing Ry to Open Gym on Monday afternoon where he played with the equipments there and to the Waddlers Lesson on Friday morning. Thus, I figured out it was worth the trouble and the price that I paid for especially during winter now as he can expend all his energies during the visits instead of cooping up at our little apt.

Ry really looked forward to the time we go to My Gym and he's totally into climbing all over the ramps, trampolines , slides, and tunnels etc. Like this morning, he promptly went to change out of his pyjamas when I told him that we were going to "Gym Gym" later. If not, he usually needs a lot of coaxing to get him to change in the morning, especially if the Disney playhouse is on.
The best thing is that this studio rearranges their equipment and layout every week so that the kids do not get bored with them. Also, I realised that his confidence and his balancing skills improved after attending the lessons for a month. He can now walk in a single file on a narrow ramp and can do simple somersaults with the help of the instructors. In addition, he learned to pick up more words there like he would say "ball" when he threw the balls and learned to follow simple instructions well.

Ry hanging on the trapeze during one of the lessons. He loved it so much that he went to have another turn! Sometimes, they do simple flips on the bar! Hope he doesn't turn out to be a monkey because of the lessons!

In fact, I think he enjoyed My Gym lessons more than the music lessons as there's more varieties in the lesson structure. The instructors change activities every 10 minutes and they do a variety of activities like gymnastics, music, dance, stretching and separation time. The separation time means that the parents and caregivers will leave the kids alone to play with the toys and interact with the instructors and other kids in the studio for around 10 - 15 minutes. So, usually, I will walk out of the playspace and look at Ry from the lobby to see how he interacts with other people. He is pretty independent and has never looked for me, unlike some other kids who will search for their parents. Also, Ry learned to do "Hip hip Hurray" by throwing up both of his hand into the air whenever we say hurray! So cute!

Ry going through the obstacles course all by himself!

Separation time! Ry totally forgets his mummy whenever the toys are out!

New York Trip _ 14 - 16 Dec

Day before NY trip, Sat, 13 Dec

Yay, after almost 2.5 months after our Niagara Falls trip, we are finally on the road again to New York City, the big apple of US. I was in charge of packing all the stuff needed for the trip and cleaning up our apartment before we left cos we got our apt manager to clean the carpet for us when we were away. Of course, we had to pay him forty bucks for his work but we still think it is worth it as K wouldn't have to spend a day of backbreaking work to do it and the timing is just nice as we would vacate the apt and allow time for the carpet to dry up before we are back.

So after all the packing and clearing of stuff from the floor, it was almost midnight before K and I went to bed on Sat. Before we turned in, K jokingly commented that dunno whether there would be anymore unlucky events for our trip to NY as for the past 3 times that we had been in NY state, there were flight delays, so we had always jokingly associated NY as a unlucky place to go to. We agreed that we would wake up at 5 am so that we have enough time to leave our apt at 6.30 am and putting away the last of the few items on the floor. Then K went ahead to set the alarm on his handphone for 5 am.

NY Day 1, Sunday, 14 Dec
Guess what happened when we woke up the next morning by the alarm? The sky was bright and cheery and when I checked the clock, it was almost 7 am. We were supposed to be at South Station to take our bus to NY by 7.15 am latest. So we quickly rushed through our errands, packed our breakfast and rebooked the tickets online for the next bus at 8.30 am and rushed out of our place within 30 minutes. On our way there, I jokingly chastised K for making the joke the previous night and thus jinxing our NY trip. Fortunately, we made it in time for the 830 am bus and off we went to NY city in a 4 hour bus ride.

We reached NY Penn Station around noon and so the first thing we did was to look for lunch. We went into a tiny shop nearby that serves Chinese buffet where one can get 5 varieties of dish for $5 in a lunch box. To our surprise, the food was pretty good and Ry ate quite a bit of the food. It is no wonder my friend here, LC always commented that NY has better and cheaper food than Boston.

After lunch, we walked from 32nd street (Penn Station) to 48th street (Times Sq) to our hotel- Paramount Hotel. It seems like it is a long walk of 16 blocks away but in fact, it is only a 15 - 20 minutes walk only. For those who had been to NY should know the exorbitant hotel rates they have during the holiday season and peak periods. So this time round, I only booked a room with a full size bed for the three of us, which already set me back $420 for 2 nights stay. I have already known that the room will be small but I was pretty surprised that the room was even smaller than those in Hong Kong. But the room was clean and really made efficient use of space that we can fit our luggage into the closet and our stroller in without any problems.

This shows how small the room was that I did not even have space to move back to take a picture of the whole room.

For this trip, we decided that we would do the most touristy thing by taking up the Grayline double decker bus hop-on and off sightseeing tour since I'm getting pretty heavy and with the short time frame we were there, we figured out that this would be probably the most efficient way of getting to know NY. Moreover, K is not interested in buildings and the art museums that NY is famous for. Therefore, it made more sense for us to join the tour.

On the top deck of the covered tour bus, which was good as we were shield from the wind and the cold and yet can see the streets and buildings below.

The first thing that we did was to hop onto the Uptown bus tour which brought us to Harlem and Central Park. There was a guide on the bus who will point out the attractions to us and made reference to movies or famous people in association to the buildings. So, I guessed it wasn't too bad since I would not have known which building it was that John Lennon was shot if we would to walk around on our own while jostling our ways through the crowd on the streets and the subway in the cold.

Ry was definitely a bit bored during the bus tour and he promptly fell asleep halfway through the trip. After the bus tour to uptown, we decided to walk around Times Square for a while and to go to Toys R Us there for Ry to have some fun time at the indoor Ferris Wheel. It was a huge crowd at the store and I could have never linked the busy crowd to recession as everyone was carrying huge bags and baskets of toys. I did not dare to venture far alone with Ry in the store with the huge crowd so I stood at a place with Ry, looking at the Ferris wheel while K went to get his much needed coffee for the day even though it was already evening. When K came back with the coffee, we toured around the whole store before proceeding to the 1st floor to get tickets for the Ferris wheel ride.
Took this picture of the indoor Ferris wheel in Toys R Us while waiting for K. Ry kept pointing excitedly at it but unfortunately, we never got to the ride.

However, to my disappointment, when we went to get the ride , the tickets for 6 pm to 7 pm were all sold out even though it was only 545 pm then. I did not know the procedure of buying tickets for a specific timing as I thought that it was the usual way of buying the tickets and queue on the spot. So by the time we went to get the ride, we had already finished touring the whole store so in the end, we decided that we would not take the ride and left the store.

Letting Ry had a little fun time with the trains and tracks at the Toys R Us. It was so crowded that we left shortly afterwards. K joked that the people there were buying toys as if they were free but I guessed this was because it was the peak Christmas shopping weekend since it was only about a week away to Christmas.

It was still early so we decided to walk to Rockefeller center to look at their famous Christmas tree and the skating rink they have for Christmas every year and probably have our dinner nearby. It took us about 30 minutes to make our way there and we couldn't figure out which was the building that housed the Christmas tree. We thought of following the huge crowds in one of the directions as we figured that that maybe the building we were looking for but we were also worried that we may not find any restaurants or dinner places as well. So, in our good sense, we walked the opposite direction and went in search for a dinner place and later hopped onto the Holiday night bus tour that was in the package we booked, figuring out that the bus would probably take us past the Rockefeller center as well. The whole holiday night bus tour was another 2 hours through the heavy traffic but it brought us to all the places that have the beautiful Christmas lighting and displays like the flagship stores, Macy, Lord and Taylor, fifth avenue and Rockefeller center.

This was only the tip of the iceberg. The crowd at Times Sq that Sunday was much more than this. Couldn't even imagine New Year Eve when the countdown takes place.

The Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center.

The Christmas display outside Macy.

At the Hershey's store after the holiday lights tour, Ry was having a lot of fun playing with the wheel and refused to leave so he ended up crying when we carried him away.

Ry still sulking and probably tired when we moved on to the M & M store, so we decided to call it a night after this.

NY Day 2, Monday, 15 Dec

After a good night rest, we went out in the morning to have our breakfast. We realised from our previous 2 bus tours that in almost every 1 - 2 blocks within the city, there seems to be one McDonald and Starbucks. In comparison, Boston has fewer MacDonald and more Dunkin Donuts instead. So, no surprise, we had McDonald for our breakfast nearby before taking the bus tour for the Downtown loop that will bring us to Eastwich village, Chinatown, Wall Street, site of World Trade Center and the South Street seaport where we boarded the complimentary water taxi in the package to see the Statue of Liberty.

At the South Street Seaport Pier where we were waiting for the boat.

The only whole family portrait we had throughout the whole trip.

On our way to the Statue of Liberty.

A view of the Brooklyn bridge, Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty in the same picture.

We were blessed with a wonderful weather that day. The day warmed up to around 15 deg C and it was all clear skies, so it made the 1 hr boat ride to see the Statue of Liberty very enjoyable. After a quick lunch at the seaport food court, we hopped onto the return route of the tour bus so that we can alight at Central Park to go to American Museum of Natural History.
It is no wonder that New Yorkers prefer to walk and taking the subway because we were stuck in the traffic and later, the bus got detoured from its route, so we never get to make our way to the Central Park stop. In the end, we alighted near Times Sq at 47th street and decided to walk all the way to 79th street to where the museum is. It took us a whole 40 minutes walk to reach there but since the weather was great, we really enjoyed it.
The gigantic T-Rex fossil.

At the ice-age exhibit gallery.

By the time we reached the museum, it was already 3 p.m so we only had about 2.5 hrs to tour the whole museum before it closed. It is a really big museum with 4 levels so we figured out we would not be able to finish seeing everything and need to be selective in the galleries. We decided to follow what the Frommers guide book recommended and went to see the Dinosaurs gallery first. The museum really has a great collection of dinosaurs fossils like T-Rex, Brontosaurus and a whole lot of others that I do not know of. Ry had a good time running around in the museum after being in the stroller and bus for so long. We put Ry on a leash that is linked to cute teddy backpack that he carry and everyone around us often stopped and looked at him and commented how cute it was.

Next we toured the Biodiversity gallery and later the Primates, Native Americans and Asian galleries. We left the museum when they announced they were closing in 30 minutes time. By then, we were famished as we only had a light lunch before hand. So we decided to trek backwards to Times Sq to look for a dinner place. We managed to find a decent looking restaurant that looks kid friendly near the 56th street and we just went in there. Indeed, the food was great! K had a baked halibut and I had a spaghetti with meatballs casserole. The portions were huge but we managed to finish everything. Ry also enjoyed the food tremendously especially the cheesecake we had afterwards. Yummy! We felt that the cheesecake was much better than those at Cheesecake Factory here in Boston.

NY Day 3, Tuesday, 16 Dec

We had a bad night sleep because the air con in our room was faulty. Instead of blowing cool air, it started to blow out steam near midnight. Although the engineer sort of got it fixed, the air con went bonkers again near 6 am. By then, we had enough so we decided to open the window slightly to let the wintry cold air in instead. It was 9 am before we managed to wake up, so we decided to just pack up and check out of the hotel.

We decided to walk to Grand Central Terminal for breakfast and to look at the architecture there. It is a really grand terminal and K said that it reminded him of Paris with all the complicated motifs and sculptures on the ceiling. I wanted to go to see New York Public Library where Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City movie had her wedding but we were refused entry because we were not supposed to bring in any luggage. So I only had a picture of its exteriors and never get to see its grand halls and stairways. After that, we made our way to Macy and the nearby shops for some last minute shopping and look around.
Ry on the leash at the Grand Central Terminal and passer-bys just loved to stop and look at us.

One of the things that I train Ry to do is to hold on to handles of the luggage or the sides of the stroller while walking if I have no hands to hold him especially when I go grocery shopping and his stroller is used to carry the bags. So this is one picture of him holding on to the luggage handle when I asked him to do it while we were waiting for daddy.

The weather that day took a huge turn back to the winter weather with temperatures hovering around 1 deg C and the sky was all gloomy and dark. We were so glad that we had the good weather the day before. By noon time, it started to snow heavily so we quickly went into a restaurant in the Penn hotel opposite Madison Square Garden / Penn Station for lunch and to stay out of the snow. We heard from the locals that it was the first snow day in New York this year and we can see that the locals were pretty excited about it. By the time, we finished lunch, it was almost time for us to board our bus back to Boston. So goodbye New York City!

Ry goofing around at the lobby of the Penn Hotel while waiting for daddy to buy fresh milk to top up his vacuum flask before we board the bus home.

4.5 hours later due to the bad weather, we were finally back in Boston and the temperature was freezing. We quickly made our way home. When we opened the door to our apt, we felt that we were in a brand new apt because of the lemony detergent smell that still lingered in the air after the carpet was cleaned and the carpet felt so clean upon stepping on it! Home sweet home!

SG Ladies Gathering

Ever since I got the car and became a full time SAHM in Sept, I began to join in the monthly gathering organised by a group of SG ladies who stayed nearby in Somerville. K used to joke that I am going for Joy Luck Club gathering. Most of these ladies arrived here last July. They are here because their husbands are attending the MIT Sloan executive MBA program.

Initially, the gathering is among these 4 "MIT" ladies who stay near to each other but they gradually invited other SG ladies who they came to know of, like me. So now, this gathering has a total of 9 SG ladies and sometimes with the inclusion of 1 -2 Japanese ladies too. The 4 "MIT" ladies are Mei who is the main organiser, also my fellow colleague in MOE, who has a seven yr old girl and a three yr old boy, Yee, Ping and Dawn. The others include Sok whose hubby is studying at Tufts University, Karen and Eunice whose hubbies are doctors on attachment to the local hospitals here. Last, there is Pin whom I just met in the last gathering. She is a researcher at Harvard Law School and happened to be a close friend of the Mumbai's terrorism victim.

Usually, we meet at Mei's 3-storeys house in Somerville as she has the largest place to accomodate all the kids and the ladies. We will also bring along some food to her place and usually has a brunch potluck there. The ladies will usually exchange interesting news and information among each other in the dining area while the kids get to play with each other in the living room. Actually, it is more like the kids play on their own with the toys available as they are all around the age of 1.5 - 2.5 yrs old except for Mei's kids who are older and are in school whenever we meet in the morning.

Last Thursday, we had the last gathering of this year and Karen suggested the theme of Christmas. So, each of us tried to bring food items that is related to Christmas, so that we can have a Christmas celebration. Sok was so nice to buy every kid a Christmas present even though we had agreed beforehand that there would not be any exchanging of presents.

Our contributions to the food table. There's spaghetti, cupcakes, bagels, eggnogs, fruits, muffins and honey wings. As usual, we're left with a lot of food as everyone was busy interacting and catching up with each other.

Our first group photo despite the numerous gatherings that we had and this is not the full group yet. There were quite a few absentees as some of them were sick or away on holidays. And some kids were playing in the living room while the photo was taken. The lady in white is Mei and this is her house where the gatherings are usually hosted.

The youngest baby and one of the 3 precious girls in the brood of 10 kids. Most of us have boys, so one can imagine the rowdiness whenever we had a gathering. Isn't she adorable?

I'm teaching Ry the concept of baby here and he's really very gentle with her when he stroked her earlier. Hope he will do the same to his little baby brother in 2.5 months time!

An Afternoon @ Harvard Sq Christmas Celebration

For the past few weeks, K was busy with his upcoming presentation and trying to complete as much of his work as possible before we go off for our New York trip this Sunday. So, last Sunday, I decided to bring Ry out to Charles Hotel at Harvard Square for their ice-skating rink opening ceremony after lunch so as to leave some peace for K to finish his work. Our energetic 21 mth old is now too much of a distraction for K to work at home as Ry will keep pestering K to play with him.

It was just a simple Christmas event organised by the hotel and the Harvard Square. To make it more memorable that day, it was the first snow day this year in Boston. I remembered we woke up to seeing little snow flakes falling from the sky. It was so beautiful and 7 Dec was also our 5 year customary wedding anniversary, which make it more significant for me to write it down.

At the hotel, we first met Santa Claus who was sitting on a chair to be pictured with kids. It was a charity event and people can donate money into the box after the pictures. Ry was not at all intimidated by Santa and was agreeable to taking picture with him, although he stayed stiff throughout the whole pose!

Next we went to the skating rink and enjoyed the performance by some young amateur ice-skaters. Many families with kids were waiting outside the rink despite the freezing temperature of -1 deg C with their own skates so they can go in to skate after the performance. I think it is really very nice for the Harvard Sq committee and the hotel to provide a free ice-skating rink for people to skate throughout the winter till March.

Ry actually enjoyed the snow falling on his face and he refused to get into his stroller and insisted on walking around on his own!

Look at the snow that was still falling onto our coats.

After a short stay at the performance, we went into the hotel for other activities. I was surprised by the hospitality of the hotel. They actually provide gingerbread man cookies, frosting, hot chocolate with marshmallows, coffee for free. Legal Seafood even provides free clam chowder. Yummy! Although I had a full lunch beforehand, I still can't resist the temptations of a cup of warm hot chocolate with marshmallow and some cookies. So, Ry and me were in a hall enjoying our little treat and Ry was also busy playing with the balloons and doodling with the crayons. The whole experience really lifted my Christmas spirits and of course, I was wondering at the back of mind, will there be similar free events in SG? Probably there is, I think it is the humid weather back at home and the ks syndrome that will make it less enjoyable.

His favourite activity throughout the afternnon was to repeatedly pull the balloon down and letting it float up to the ceiling.

A classic model pose!

Look at Ry's big tummy! He really eats non-stop nowadays just like the preggy me!

Since Ry had such a good time, I decided probably it was a good time to bring him for a haircut at the salon nearby. K came to join us as we thought that we needed K to carry Ry during the cut. But, to our surprise, our little boy is now independent enough to sit through the haircut on his own, though with the coaxing of the experienced hairstylist and the 2 lollipops that she gave to him. I was so happy that Ry did not cry at all although he did squirm and tried to dodge the shaver and the scissors as they become too ticklish against his skin. I was also tickled by his serious face with a frown and I remembered in Dan's blog that her son also had the same expression during his haircut!

Ry and his 2 little lollipops throughout the whole haircut.

The similar frown in all kid's face during the haircut!

Thanksgiving and the afterthoughts

Thursday, Nov, 27 was Thanksgiving holiday by which most Americans reunite with their family members for a sumptuous dinner, usually with roast turkeys and other goodies. However, I seem to feel that thanksgiving this year is touched by a wee sense of melancholy and sadness, especially with the gloomy economic forecast and the tragic news of terrorist attacks in Mumbai. I was saddened by the fact that a fellow Singaporean was a casualty of the mindless and cruel terrorism on the same day.

Despite these, on the same day, I was busy in the kitchen preparing food for a potluck dinner with a fellow SG family. There were roast chicken with garlic and lemon, apple crumble, poached carrots in chicken stock, herbal chicken soup, grilled asparagus and baked corn while my fellow friend, A brought along fried bee hoon and potato croquettes. We did indeed have a good time together in the evening, savouring all the delicacies and letting our little ones play together. Initially, I was pretty worried that Ry will be a little tyrant at home and refuse to share his toys with E. But, I was surprised at how gracious little Ry was as a host. He was willing to share his toys and did not kick up a fuss at all. Probably, it was because daddy was at home the whole afternoon and they already had a great time together, which thus explained Ry's good mood.

Ry and E playing with the toys after the dinner.

The days following Thanksgiving are usually filled with the much anticipation for the year end Christmas and New Year celebration. Back in SG, I was usually not caught up in any of these festive spirits and was usually unaware of the days and events leading up to the finale. However, after being here in US when one is always bombarded with advertisements and news of Christmas shopping plus the warm up effect of Thanksgiving holiday and the crazy Black Friday sale, I definitely feel more immersed in the whole festive season. Also, the cold weather and the possibility of a White Christmas definitely adds to the feel.

Ry's winter suit-up whenever we are outdoor which usually keeps him warm and cosy in the sub zero temperature now, especially after Thanksgiving when we are expecting the snow soon.

In about 2 weeks time, we will be in New York to experience the whole Christmas season and this would be one of my last long haul travels before I have to retreat at home to await the birth of Br. Probably, we would be going to a farm stay in New Hampshire during the New Year period as an alternative to skiing.

As year 2008 coming to a close, it also signifies the new challenges for me in year 2009 with 2 little boisterous boys and the reality and challenges of our whole family moving back to SG. It also signifies the little time left for me to enjoy my life here as a SAHM in US and the time that I can wholeheartedly spend with Ry. As K has been constantly reminding me not to become too comfortable in my life here, the reality has finally sink in for me to make me think that I need to attune my mindset to the coming challenges as a working mum next year around the same time.

Toilet Training our Little One!

Ever since Ry hits the 18th mth old mark, K has been badgering me to start toilet training for Ry. But I've kept procrastinating ever since and had been giving reasons like, "it's hard for me to do so when I keep bringing him out" or "he won't poop if we start disturbing him during his business" etc. Basically, it is just me not feeling confident enough to start so and not seeing the need upon seeing so many other mums comfortable with their babies wearing diapers even when they are 2 yrs old, although I understand from books that it is okay to start toilet training from 18 mths old.

But a rare chance came last Friday when Ry was doing his big business. As usual, he likes to stand still while doing it and when he's done, he would run off to the changing room to get his diaper changed when I asked him, "do u want to change?". So when I removed his diaper and saw that he had not pooped but still have the urge of doing it, I quickly seized the opportunity and brought him to the toilet and put on the new child toilet seat that we have bought for months, while hastily removing the plastic cover and hoping Ry won't pooped on the floor. And guess what, Ry successfully pooped in the toilet! I was so happy and allowed him to flush the toilet himself. He was so proud and so happy to be able to flush the toilet as he has always been fascinated by the lever ever since he understands its function.

For the next 2 days, I was trying to hope to catch him in his big business action so that we can redo the toilet training thing again but he did not go, much to the disappointment of daddy who wants to catch him in action too! However, this morning, Ry successfully did his big business again in the toilet!

I would have never guess that being parents can make one so proud of such a small, little unattractive and embarrassing issue of the little one pooping! Regardless, I'm still elated that Ry managed to do it twice in a row and I guess I would be toilet training him for peeing soon in the next month or so, I hope! And daddy would be so happy that he won't have to spend that much of money buying diapers!

Marketing, Cooking and Ground Beef Casserole

Usually once a week, I will take a 20 minutes drive to Super 88 - a Chinese supermarket in Allston and the next door Shaws supermarket to top up some vegetables and meat. K and I still have very much the Chinese palette, so we can't survive only on the ang moh vegetables like squash, brocolli and cauliflower. I still need my leafy vegetables like Xiao Bai Cai and Cai Xin. But ever since I found that Market Basket in Somerville (about 10 mins away) is so much cheaper in meat and other staples, I have been going there to stock up my freezer with meat once a fortnight.

It was about 3 weeks since I went to Market Basket. So, on Monday, my freezer was almost empty except left 2 packs of chicken thigh meat and ground beef. Since we had chicken for lunch and I do not like to cook the same thing for dinner too. I decided to do something with my ground beef, which I usually reserve for cooking pasta. Thank goodness, there is thing called Internet!

Being a SAHM in US really makes me appreciate the Internet, which I have been scounging around people's food blogs and recipe sites. It is really my lifesaver here and helps me out when I'm running out of ideas to cook. K has now been constantly praising my cooking and my baking efforts :> At least, it makes me feel worthwhile to make sumptuous meals for the family and honing my culinary skills here.

I googled around and found the beef casserole recipe, which seemed easy enough to make and allowed me to use up the remaining potatoes too. To complement this one pot dish already with meat and veg, I decided to fry eggs too. This is also to make sure that Ry has something to eat if he doesn't like the casserole and eggs never fail. Fortunately, Ry loves it and he finished his whole portion. K and I also had Hainanese Chicken Rice made with the ready Prima Deli sauce to go with the dish and it went surprisingly well! Yummy!

The following recipe has been slightly modified as I want to incoporate some spinach and I do not have shredded cheddar cheese, so used 2 slices of American cheese and grated parmesan cheese instead.

Ground Beef Casserole

Ingredients:

1/2 pounds of lean ground beef

1/4 cup of chopped onions

1-2 potatoes peeled, sliced (depending on size of potatoes)

6 mini carrots, shredded

1/4 cup of baby spinach

1/2 can cream of mushroom soup

2 slices of American cheese (cut into strips)

grated parmesan cheese

salt and ground black pepper

1/2 tsp canola oil

Steps:

  1. Heat the oil in the skillet and the brown ground beef in a skillet with chopped onions until the onions are tender
  2. Transfer ground beef and onion to casserole dish.
  3. Add a layer of sliced raw potatoes and sprinkle them with a dash of salt and pepper. (Not too much salt as the canned mushroom soup is quite salty itself. I also added some dried parsley flakes too)
  4. Cover the potatoes with the shredded carrots.
  5. Top the carrot layer with baby spinach.
  6. Pour the canned soup over the spinach.
  7. Bake at 350 F for 40 - 50 minutes or until potatoes are tender.
  8. Sprinkle the cheese on top and bake for an additional 5 minutes or until the cheese is melted.

Children Museum, 9 Nov

Ry is almost fully recovered from his dreadful cold by Sun although he still has remnants of the cough, which is part and parcel of winter life here. The good news is that he got back part of his appetite on Sat. It was such a relief for me, meaning that there is no more awful food struggles, although now he has learned now how to reject food. But at least he's eating! Hurray!

So we decided to proceed with our plan to the Children Museum despite the fact that K and I were coming down with a cold. We met up with another SG family who just arrived in Boston three weeks ago at Hei La Moon restaurant in Chinatown to have dim sum brunch before making our way to the museum. V and A have 2 beautiful girls aged 5 years old and 21 months old respectively. It was so neglectful of me to forget to take a picture of them. Will remember to do it the next time we meet.

The children museum consists of 3 storeys with different theme rooms but for our young one, it is only the toddler playroom that can hold his interest most. Also, it is probably the safest place by which he would not be knocked down by other older and excited kids. On the whole, it is a nice little museum that allows us to spend a day indoors in the cold day. Probably, I'll go back with Ry on Friday nights, which has a flat rate of $1 admission during the coming winter months so that he can spend some time playing in the indoor playroom and I can do some marketing at the Chinatown supermarket after that as well. In addition, on that Sunday itself, there was a literacy campaign and exhibition going on so I was going around the stalls and happily collecting freebies like book, playdohs and mask for Ry. Yah, I know this so typical of the "yao-gui" Singaporean mentality as K will say.

Ry can now climb the stairs, crawl through tunnels and coming down the slide all by himself and he enjoys all these physical challenges. I'm definitely bringing him to indoor playhouse so that he can engage himself when playing outdoor is not an option anymore in the coming winter months.

One of Ry's favourite activity in the playroom is to climb into the car and pretend to drive, which he also makes a cute "bo bo" sound when he press the horn.

The water room has plastic aprons for kids to put on so that they do not get wet and all the water in it is warm!

This is just me posing to pull Ry up using the pulley system. It was daddy who did all the job of hoisting our little one high up!

Halloween!

Last thursday, we went to the library for a Halloween party. I was dressed as a frog. The costume was borrowed from Uncle M.

This is the backview of my costume! We were there really early! As usual, daddy and mommy are always so kiasu!

See, I was right in front of the performance put up by the librarians. I think I see a witch, a rabbit and a giant squid or is it an octopus?

Mommy and me having a good time during the sing and dance session while daddy is busy with taking beautiful photos of me!

This bumble bee is my good friend and we always have play dates together. Although most of the time, I always get "bullied" by him but because I'm younger and smaller and got a "bully me" face as daddy and mommy always say.
